Topping of the week of Graduations

To top of the week of Graduation celebrations we ended in Invercargill, where we had 7 families complete their training held at South Centre Anglican Care Charitable Trust. 

This was a cluster group, compiled of families who couldn't attend the previous training's at schools, and families recommended by South Centre. It was a nice afternoon, with some excitement mixed in when the toasties in the oven set the fire alarm off.

This small group showed enormous commitment to the programme, and to upskilling themselves so that they could help their tamariki.

One keen learner remarked how much they had learnt from the 20 hours training, and they had made a brand new CV so they were now ready to take on the world.

Congratulations to all our families that graduated this week, we loved celebrating your successes, hard work and determination. 

Wonderful Graduation in Central Southland

#2 of 3 Graduation took place in the last week of November 2016 in Central Southland at the REAP House in Winton, where we had 9 hardworking families graduate.

What a group of vivacious ladies! Our tutor Nathan got presented with a lovely home-made card that the girls had all signed and wished him well, it is great to see our tutors establishing a strong connection with our families. This enhances their learning, and gives an approachable and friendly outlook to our Computers In Homes initiative.

A lot of positive feedback came from this class with 4 of their friends signing up for the waiting lists for the next intake.

Heartwarming Gore Graduation

In the last week of November 2016 we had our first graduation for the week (1 of 3). This was held in Eastern Southland at the REAP House in Gore, where we had 8 hardworking families graduate.

Some wonderful praise was given by the families that were able to engage in the opportunity to complete the Computers in Homes Programme.

With one woman commenting how life changing this would be for her and her teenage son, who had been staying after school at the computer suite to study as they did not have a computer in the home. She said this would open up so many more opportunities for her family and couldn't thank us enough.

Delicious kai, and good company made the afternoon a success. I wish the Gore group all the best.

Success in Southland

We are all go down here in sunny Southland, with training's currently taking place in Winton, Gore and Invercargill. It is great to see a wide variety of families come forward, and be able to take up this opportunity to gain education and enrich lives all around them.

We are currently coordinating training's for Term 1 of next year in schools, and also in communications with a youth organisation in Invercargill, which is opening new doors outside of the schools arena.

Successful business venture from past whanau

The wonderful ladies from Takitimu Primary School in Ohai / Nightcaps had their graduation on Wednesday night. To celebrate we had an authentic hot hangi from one of our past whanau who completed their 10 weeks training, and is now successfully running his own business.

A huge thank you to Hangi Southland for the delicious kai. It is heart-warming to see such success through the Computers In Homes programme.

The planning is now underway for training in Tapanui, Invercargill and further training in Ohai / Nightcaps. With the new team consisting of Amanda Keen and Louise Powell - under Kate McRae's expert guidance. We are all looking forward to the new challenges ahead.

Its all go for 2016

The Southern TEAM of Computers in Homes has been very busy with three different locations for training being held.
St Josephs in Invercargill held their graduation last Friday 13th with certificates being presented as part of the full school assembly.  The children were very proud of their parents getting up to accept their certificates. 

A group are currently training in Gore on Thursdays at REAP House.
Two classes are also running at New River in Invercargill on Mondays .. with 17 families in total for the school being part of the programme.
Many thanks to our tutor/technician Nathan Iveson who does an awesome job working with these families on the programme.

Welcome to 2016!

As the new year is well and truly apon us planning is now underway for training at Aparima College, New River Primary, St Josephs, Central Southland College and Waihopai Runanga.

We had a visit from our local MP Todd Barclay who was interested at the progress with the Computers In Homes programme in Southland.  He is very supportive of the programme and the opportunites it provides for the families in Southland.

Plans are underway for Computers in Homes in Southland in 2016.
We are looking at delivering programmes at New River Primary in Invercargill , Aparima in Riverton as well as others ...

Second Group graduate at Newfield

Six more families trotted home with their computers last Friday after completing their 20 hours of training at Newfield School.  Under the superb tutoring from Nathan Iveson these families are now hooking up to 2degrees to get Internet into their homes.  Many thanks and congratulations to you all for your dedication to the programme.

What a Fabulous Friday Afternoon Celebration!

10 families graduated from Newfield School under the watchful eye of Nathan Ineson.  They were a fantastic group of learners who were keen to learn!  Some even learnt how to make balls using tutorials on You tube.  Principal Sonya Creedy spoke very positively of the programme and the wonderful stories that had been shared during the trainings.
Many smiling little faces left with their Mums to go home and set up their computers!

Graduations at Gore Marae and Winton

Computers in Homes training has now finished at the Gore Marae and in Winton.
Whanau worked hard during their 20 hours of training to complete their courses and are now proud owners of computers in their homes.  It is great to be part of providing this resource for our children's learning.

2015 Computers In Homes action in the South

As the new year started so did the Computers in Homes programmes in Southland.
It is great to finally have training up and going in the Te Whanau o Hokonui Marae in Gore with great support from Tau.
A Cluster has been formed to accommodate families from Lumsden and Winton Schools.  This training has started in Winton.

During the official opening of our REAP House in Gore Hon Bill English met one of our Computers in Homes tutors and technicians.  He was delighted to hear the programme has started well in the South and went back to Wellington with our Annual Report to read.

Kate also had the opportunity to speak with Todd Barclay MP for Clutha Southland about the Computers In Homes programme that is happening in his patch of the woods. 

Computers In Homes Graduation In Central Southland

In conjuction with the Winton and Districts Community Worker and our local schools we clustered a group of whanau together to train at Southern REAP in Winton.  Due to some of our students having preschool children we also ran a creche next door so that the Mums could train and the children could play!
Eight students graduated at the end of October and it was great to have all the whanau join us after school for this celebration. 
Congratulations to everyone who recieved a certificate and good luck with your continued learning.

Another series of Training at Takitimu Primary School

Following on from a very successful series of Computers in Homes trainings a further group of whanau have now completed their 20 hours training.  This group worked really hard with our tutor Debbie, and they were so excited to finally recieve their certificates.  One special lady who has full care of her grandchild said it has opened up a whole new world.

Graduation a Huge Celebration for Takitimu School

16 graduates joined with their whanau to celebrate the completion of their training for Computers In Homes on Monday 25th August.  It was a fabulous celebration of their commitment to the programme and upskilling to help with tamariki. 
Principal, Lindsay King, was thrilled with the night and pleased to see so much support for the students.

Training nearly completed in Nightcaps

Some days it snowed .. some days it hailed .. but our dedicated two groups of 16 whanau have trudged through to be nearly completed their training for Computers In Homes. 
Under the great guidance of Debbie, we are planning to graduate the Takitimu School whanau on Monday 25th August - what a celebration there will be in Nightcaps!!

Computers In Homes has been all go in the South

Wow - our first six months has been a full on time in the South.  We have graduated two groups from Gore with much pride and emotion from our whanau.  It has been great to see the development of our learners, starting with not knowing how to use a mouse through to emailing us when they were online.
We were very fortunate to have Tim Findlay from Remarkit attend a recent graduation - thanks Tim for joining us for a special celebration.  We have worked closely with Vanessa who works as a whanau support working in Gore and Mataura.  She has worked hard to support the families in their learning.
Our wonderful tutor, Kendall Harrington continues to get endless accolades for his superb training and patience.  A programme is only as good as the tutor - so Kai pai to Kendall for his committment to the programme.
